An Authentic Guyanese Christmas: A Season of Flavours and Traditions

December 2025

Dear Colleague,

The Christmas season in Guyana brings everyone together through longstanding traditions, comforting flavors, and cultural celebrations that define the end-of-year atmosphere. Families prepare pepper-pot, black cake, garlic pork, and homemade ginger beer or sorrel. These are dishes that anchor Christmas morning across the country. Music adds to the rhythm of the season, with steel pan, parang, tassa, gospel performances, and drumming heard throughout villages and city streets. It is a time when the concept of One Guyana truly shines.

Festivities in the Capital

In Georgetown, the signature highlight is the One Guyana Christmas Village & Supermarket along Main Street, a much-anticipated event that transforms the capital into a vibrant festive corridor. Visitors can browse decorated booths, shop for local crafts and seasonal treats, enjoy nightly performances, and take in the illuminated displays that turn Main Street into a family-friendly celebration space. The energy continues on Boxing Day and further into the new year, when outings, sporting activities, and social gatherings extend the holiday atmosphere. Signature ‘Old Year's Night’ parties to usher in the new year are certainly not to be missed!
